Amrita Performing Arts’ Executive Director Fred Frumberg and Program Director Kang Rithisal are attending the Asia Pacific International Dance Conference 2011 (APIDC 2011) in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia from September 21 to 25, 2011, organized in collaboration with WDA World Dance Alliance.
Amrita Performing Arts has chaired Cambodia’s Chapter of the World Dance Alliance Asia Pacific since January 2006, and has participated in most of WDA’s activities including the last WDA conference in New York City. Fred Frumberg joined the conference along with Chey Chankethya who is one of Cambodia’s leading contemporary dancers who is now pursuing her master degree as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In November 2009 at the WDA conference in New Delhi, Amrita launched the book Beyond the Apsara: Celebrating Dance in Cambodia which was published by Routledge and produced in collaboration with Stephanie Burridge.
This year’s conference is co-organized by the Malaysian National Department for Culture and Arts, Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture; MyDance Alliance; and World Dance Alliance Asia Pacific under the theme of Hybridity in Dance: Researching, Performing, and Writing Old and New Genres. At this conference, international dance scholars have assembled to present papers, making this a significant and exciting event in the field of dance studies. Also remarkable at the conference is the launch of two books Sharing Identities: Celebrating Dance in Malaysia and Shaping the Landscape: Celebrating Dance in Australia which are part of the same series of which our book, Beyond the Apsara, was the first.
