We have been very lucky this month to host the visit of Peter Wilson, an Australian puppeteer, director, producer, writer and teacher. Watch his showreel (below) for a taste of just some the amazing projects he’s worked on, from the Sydney Olympics opening ceremony in 2000 to the musical King Kong, which has just finished an eight month run in Australia and will later transfer to the New York stage.
Peter visited Cambodia to learn more about Cambodian puppetry and explore creating a new work featuring a range of Cambodian artists. The plan is that he will return next year to develop the performance. In his last few days he shared this brief look back over his time here…
“I arrived in Cambodia on the 3rd of May and have had the most extraordinary itinerary arranged for me by Amrita. I have met many artists including Pich Sopheap, Mang Sarith and the wonderful artists at Wat Bo where I gave a three day workshop and we held a special showing of one of their works on the final night. I met and worked with the company at Sovanna Phum Art Association and Kok Thlok. When not working with artists, I have visited museums and galleries, S21 and other significant ‘killing fields’. Days visiting Angkor Wat and the many temples in Siem Reap were magnificent.
I had a fabulous time running a three day workshop with Phare Ponleu Selpak in Battambang and I’m now in the midst of my final workshop with the artists from Amrita Performing Arts plus other independent visual artists based in Phnom Penh.”
Peter also worked with our choreographers during our latest Contemporary Dance Platform sharing his advice, in particular, on developing the lighting of the three pieces performed. He took part in the feedback and critique session the day after the Platform, leaving our choreographers with lots of thought-provoking comments and advice.
Thank you Peter for the fun we’ve had over the last few weeks with you. We’re already looking forward to your return next year.
